Follow these guidelines to increase your security:

• Stop the engine and keep sparks and flames away before filling the fuel tank.

Ride defensively

Always be aware of other vehicles around you. and don't assume other drivers will see you. Prepare to stop quickly or take evasive action.

Make yourself easy to see

Make yourself more visible. especially at night. B. by wearing bright, reflective clothing. Position yourself so that other drivers can see you. Signaling before turning or changing lanes. and use your horn if necessary.

Ride within your limits

Never ride beyond your personal ability or faster than conditions require. Fatigue and inattention can affect your judgment and safe driving.

Don't drink or do drugs and ride

Alcohol or drugs and riding don't go together. Even a single alcoholic drink can impair your ability to respond to changing conditions. and your reaction time worsens with each additional drink. The same applies to drug use. Do not drink or use and drive. and don't let your friends do it either.

Keep your Honda in safe condition

It is important to properly maintain your vehicle and keep it in a safe driving condition.

Before each ride, inspect your vehicle and perform any recommended maintenance. Never exceed the load limits (2 p. 15). and do not modify your vehicle or install accessories that would make your vehicle unsafe (2 p. 14).

If you are involved in an accident

Your personal safety comes first. If you or someone else has been injured. Take the time to assess the severity of the injuries and whether it is safe to continue. If necessary, call emergency assistance. Also, obey applicable laws and regulations if another person or vehicle is involved in the accident.

If you decide to keep going. First turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. and assess the condition of your vehicle. Check for liquid leaks. Check the tightness of critical nuts and bolts. and check the handlebars. control lever. brakes. and wheels. Drive slowly and carefully.

Your vehicle may have suffered damage that is not immediately apparent. Have your vehicle thoroughly checked at a qualified service workshop as soon as possible.

Carbon monoxide hazard

Exhaust gases contain poisonous carbon monoxide. a colorless. odorless gas. Breathing carbon monoxide can cause unconsciousness and death.

If you run the engine in a narrow or even partially enclosed area. The air you breathe can contain dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Never leave your vehicle running in a garage or other enclosure.

WARNING

If you leave your vehicle's engine running while in an enclosed or even partially enclosed area, poisonous carbon monoxide gas can quickly build up.

This colorless breathing. odorless gas can quickly lead to unconsciousness and death.

Only run your vehicle's engine when it is outdoors in a well-ventilated area.

Adjusting the brake lever

You can adjust the distance between the tip of the brake lever and the handgrip.

# Customization method

Rotate the adjuster until the numbers line up with the index mark while pushing the lever forward to the desired position.

After setting. Before riding, check that the lever is working properly.

NOTICE Do not turn the adjuster past its natural limit.

Adjusting the rear suspension

A pin wrench is required to adjust the suspension. We recommend that you have your vehicle serviced by your dealer.

# Spring preload

With the adjuster you can adapt the spring preload to the load or the road surface.

Using a suitable pin wrench and an extension rod, turn the adjuster.

Use the pin wrench and extension rod to turn the adjuster. Position 1 is for a decrease in spring preload (soft). or turn the position to 3 to 5 to increase the spring preload (hard).

The default position is 2.

NOTICE Attempting to adjust directly from 1 to 5 or 5 to 1 can damage the shock absorber.

NOTICE Do not turn the adjuster beyond its limits.

NOTICE The rear shock absorber unit contains high-pressure nitrogen gas. Don't try to disassemble it. Service. or improperly dispose of the damper. Consult your dealer.

Troubleshooting

The engine doesn'tstart

Starter works but engine will not start

Check the following points:

● Check the correct starting order of the engine. 2 p. 51

● Check if there is petrol in the fuel tank.

● Check that the PGM-FI Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is on. u If the indicator lamp lights up. Contact your dealer as soon as possible.

Starter doesn't work

Check the following points:

● Check the correct starting order of the engine. 2 p. 51

● Make sure the engine stop switch is in the position

(running) position. 2 p. 48

● Check for blown fuse. 2 p. 108

● Check for loose battery connection (2 p. 78) or battery terminal corrosion (2 p. 68).

● Check the battery condition.

2 p. 106 If the problem persists. Have your vehicle checked by your dealer.

Troubleshooting

Overheating (H segment flashes in coolant temperature gauge)

The engine will overheat if the following occurs:

● The H segment flashes in the coolant temperature display.

● Acceleration becomes sluggish.

When this occurs. Pull safely to the curb and perform the following procedure.

Prolonged rapid idling may cause the H segment to flash.

NOTICE Continued driving with an overheated engine can result in severe engine damage.

1. Stop the engine with the ignition switch. and then turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

2. Check if the cooling fan is working. and then turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

If the fan is not running: Suspect a fault. Do not start the engine.

Transport your vehicle to your dealer.

If the fan is running: With the ignition switch off, allow the engine to cool.

3. After the engine has cooled down. Check the radiator hose and see if there is a leak.

2 p. 85 In the event of a leak: do not start the engine. Transport your vehicle to your dealer.

4. Check the coolant level in the reserve tank. 2 p. 85 u Top up coolant as required.

5. If 1-4 check normal. You can continue. But watch the temp gauge closely.

Warning indicators On or blinking

Low oil pressure indicator

When the low oil pressure indicator comes on. Drive safely to the curb and turn off the engine.

NOTICE Continuing to drive with low oil pressure can result in severe engine damage.

1. Check the engine oil level. and add oil as needed. 2 p. 83. 2 p. 84 2. Start the engine.

When the engine oil level drops rapidly. Your vehicle could have a leak or other serious problem. Have your vehicle checked by your dealer.

PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection) Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)

If the indicator lights up while driving. There may be a serious problem with the PGM-FI system. Reduce speed and have your vehicle checked by your dealer as soon as possible.

Troubleshooting

ABS indicator (anti-lock braking system).

When the display works in one of the following ways. Maybe you have a serious problem with the ABS. Reduce your speed and have your vehicle checked by your dealer as soon as possible.

● The indicator lights up or starts flashing while driving.

● The indicator does not light up when the ignition switch is ON.

● Display does not go out at speeds over 10 km/h.

When the ABS indicator lights up. Your brakes will continue to function as a traditional system. but without anti-lock braking.

The ABS indicator may flash if you spin the rear wheel while the rear wheel is off the ground. In this case. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. and then back to the ON position. The ABS indicator will turn off when your speed reaches 30 km/h.

If the fuel system has a fault. The fuel gauge will appear as shown in the figure.

When these occur. Contact your dealer as soon as possible.

When the cooling system has a fault. All segments flash as shown in the figure.

When this occurs. Contact your dealer as soon as possible.

Troubleshooting

Repairing a flat tire or removing a wheel requires special tools and technical know-how.

We recommend that you have this type of service performed by your dealer.

After an emergency repair. Always have the tire checked/replaced by your dealer.

Emergency repair with a tire repair kit

If your tire has a small puncture. You can perform an emergency repair with a tubeless tire repair kit.

Follow the instructions included with the emergency tire repair kit.

Driving your vehicle with a temporary tire repair is very risky. Do not exceed 30 mph (50 km/h). Have the tire replaced by your dealer as soon as possible.

WARNING

Driving your vehicle with a temporary tire repair can be risky. If the temporary repair fails. You can fall and be seriously injured or killed.

When you need to drive with a temporary tire repair. Drive slowly and carefully and do not exceed 50 km/h before changing tires.

Battery runs out

Charge the battery with a motorcycle battery charger.

Remove the battery from the vehicle before charging.

Do not use a car battery charger. as these can overheat a motorcycle battery and cause permanent damage. If the battery does not recover after charging. Consult your dealer.

NOTICE Jump starting a car battery can damage your vehicle's electrical system and is not recommended.

Bump start is also not recommended.

Burnt out lightbulb

Follow these steps to replace a burned out lightbulb.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF or LOCK.

Allow the bulb to cool before replacing it.

Do not use any bulbs other than those specified.

Before setting off, check that the replacement bulb is working properly.

For the wattage of the lightbulb. see "Specifications". 2 p. 138

The headlight. front turn signals/position lights. brake light. Tail light and rear turn signals use multiple LEDs. When an LED is not turned on. Contact your dealer for maintenance.

1. Remove the screws. License light cover and license light cover packaging.

2. Pull out the bulb without turning it.

3. Install a new bulb and reinstall the parts in the reverse order of removal.

1. Remove the front seat. 2 p. 80 2. Remove the fuse box covers.

3. Pull out the fuses one by one with the fuse puller from the tool kit and check if a fuse has blown. Always replace a blown fuse with a spare of the same rating.

4. Reinstall the fuse box covers.

5. Reinstall the front seat.

# Main fuse

1. Remove the left side cover. 2 P.82 2. Disconnect the starter solenoid connector.

3. Pull out the main fuse and check for a blown fuse. Always replace a blown fuse with a spare of the same rating. u A replacement main fuse is located in the starter motor solenoid.

4. Reinstall the parts in the reverse order of removal.

NOTE If a fuse fails repeatedly. you probably have an electrical problem. Have your vehicle checked by your dealer.

Key

ignition key

This vehicle has two ignition keys and a key fob with a key number and bar code. Keep the spare key and key fob in a safe place. To make a duplicate key. Take the spare key and fob to your dealer or locksmith.

If you lose all the ignition keys and the key fob. The ignition switch assembly will likely need to be removed by your dealer to determine the key number.

A metal key holder can damage the area around the ignition switch.

Ignition lock

Leaving the ignition switch in the ON position with the engine off will drain the battery.

Do not turn the key while driving.

engine stop switch

Only use the engine stop switch in an emergency. If you do this while driving, the engine will suddenly shut off. make driving unsafe.

When you stop the engine with the engine stop switch. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Otherwise the battery will discharge.

odometer

The display stays at 999.99 when the odometer exceeds 999.99.

trip meter

Each trip meter is reset to 0.0 when the trip count exceeds 9.99.9.

The user manual. Registration. and insurance information can be stored in the plastic document pouch under the front seat.

ignition cut-off system

A lean angle sensor (bank angle sensor) automatically stops the engine and fuel pump if the vehicle falls over. To reset the sensor. You must turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and back to the ON position before the engine can be restarted.

Assist slipper clutch system

The Assist-Slipper clutch system helps prevent the rear tire from locking up when your vehicle's deceleration produces heavy engine braking. In addition, the operation of the clutch lever feels lighter.

Only use engine oil of class MA for your vehicle. Using engine oil other than MA classification oil may damage the assist slip clutch system.

Frequent cleaning and polishing is important to ensure the longevity of your Honda. A clean vehicle makes it easier to identify potential problems.

In particular. Seawater and salts used to prevent ice formation on roads encourage corrosion. Always wash your vehicle thoroughly after driving on coastal roads or treated roads.

1. Thoroughly rinse your vehicle with a low-pressure garden hose to remove loose dirt.

2. If necessary. Use a sponge or soft cloth with mild detergent to remove road dirt. u Clean the headlight glass. Panel. and other plastic parts, be extra careful not to scratch them.

Avoid directing water into the air filter. Silencer. and electrical parts.

3. Rinse your vehicle thoroughly with plenty of clean water and dry with a soft cloth. Clean clothes.

4. After the vehicle has dried. Lubricate all moving parts. u Make sure that no lubricant gets on the brakes or tires. brake discs. pads Drums or shoes that are contaminated with oil suffer from a greatly reduced braking effect and can lead to an accident.

5. Lubricate the drive chain immediately after washing and drying the vehicle.

6. Apply a coat of wax to prevent corrosion.

Aluminum corrodes from contact with dirt. Dirt. or road salt. Clean aluminum parts regularly and follow these guidelines to avoid scratches:

• Do not use stiff brushes. steel wool. or abrasive cleaning agents.

• Avoid driving over curbs or bumping into curbs.

Follow these guidelines to avoid scratches and stains:

• Wash gently with a soft sponge and plenty of water.

• To remove stubborn stains. Use diluted detergent and rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.

• Avoid getting gasoline. Brake fluid. or cleaning agents on the instruments. Panel. or headlights.

The exhaust pipe and muffler are made of stainless steel, but they can get fouled by mud or dust.

For removing mud or dust. Use a damp sponge and liquid kitchen abrasive. then rinse well with clear water. Dry with chamois or a soft towel.

If necessary. Remove heat spots with a commercially available fine-textured paste.

Then. Rinse in the same manner as removing mud or dust.

When the exhaust pipe and muffler are painted. Do not use commercially available scouring agents for the kitchen. Use a neutral detergent to clean the painted surface of the exhaust pipe and muffler. If you are not sure if your exhaust pipe and muffler are painted. Consult your dealer.

NOTE Even if the exhaust is made of stainless steel. it can become blotchy. Remove all marks and blemishes as soon as they are noticed.

When you park your vehicle outdoors. You should consider using a full body cover.

If you don't drive for a long time. follow these guidelines:

• Wash your vehicle and wax all painted surfaces (except matte painted surfaces).

Coat chrome parts with anti-rust oil.

• Lubricate drive chain. 2 p. 72

• Place your vehicle on a maintenance stand and position a block so both tires are off the ground.

• After the rain. Remove the body cover and allow the vehicle to dry.

• Remove the battery (2 p. 78) to prevent discharge. Fully charge the battery and then put it in a shady place. well-ventilated area. u If you leave the battery installed. Disconnect the negative terminal - to prevent discharge.

After taking your vehicle out of storage. Check all maintenance items required according to the maintenance schedule.

When your vehicle needs to be transported. It should be transported on a motorcycle trailer or a flatbed truck or trailer with a loading ramp or lift and motorcycle tie-down straps. Never attempt to tow your vehicle with one or more wheels on the ground.

NOTICE Towing your vehicle with one or more wheels on the ground can cause serious damage to the transmission.

Owning and driving a vehicle can be fun. but you must do your part to protect the environment.

Choose sensible cleaners

When washing your vehicle, use a biodegradable detergent. Avoid aerosol spray cleaners that contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which deplete the atmosphere's protective ozone layer.

Place oil and other toxic waste in approved containers and take them to a recycling center.

Call your local or state public works or environmental services office to locate a recycling center near you and for instructions on how to dispose of non-recyclable waste. Do not throw used engine oil in the trash, down a drain, or on the ground. used oil. Petrol. coolant. and cleaning solvents contain toxins that can injure garbage workers and contaminate drinking water. lakes rivers. and oceans.

The VIN and engine serial number uniquely identify your vehicle and are required to register your vehicle. They may also be required when ordering spare parts.

You should write down these numbers and keep them in a safe place.

Your vehicle engine emits combustion by-products. including carbon monoxide (CO). Nitrogen oxides (NOx). and hydrocarbons (HC). Gasoline vaporization also releases hydrocarbons. Controlling the production of NOx. CO and HC is important for the environment.

exhaust emission requirements

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). the California Air Resources Board (CARB). and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) require your vehicle to comply with applicable emissions standards. crankcase. and fuel permeation emission standards during its useful life. when operated and maintained in accordance with the instructions provided.

CARB also requires that your vehicle meets applicable evaporative emissions requirements throughout its useful life. If

The EPA requires vehicles built after January 1, 1983 to meet applicable noise emission standards for one year or 6.00 km (3.30 miles) after the date of purchase when operated and maintained in accordance with the instructions provided.

The emission control system includes the following components that do not require adjustment. However, regular inspection by your dealer is recommended. # PGM-FI system The PGM-FI (programmed fuel injection) system uses sequential multi-port fuel injection. and consists of an air intake. engine control. fuel control. and emission control subsystems. The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses sensors to determine how much air is entering the engine. and then controls how much fuel to inject.

# Ignition timing control system The ignition timing control system adjusts the ignition timing to reduce the amount of HC.

CO and NOx produced. # Secondary Air Injection System The secondary air injection system adds filtered air to the exhaust gas to improve emission control performance. # Catalytic Converters The exhaust system contains one or more catalytic converters. Catalytic converters use a catalyst to convert most harmful exhaust gas compounds into harmless compounds.

Catalyst

This vehicle is equipped with a three-way catalytic converter. The catalyst contains noble metals that serve as catalysts in high-temperature chemical reactions that convert hydrocarbons (HC). carbon monoxide (CO). and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust gases into safe compounds.

A defective catalytic converter contributes to air pollution and can affect the performance of your engine. A replacement unit must be a genuine Honda part or equivalent.

Follow these guidelines to protect your vehicle's catalytic converter:

• Always use unleaded petrol. Leaded gasoline will damage the catalytic converter.

• Keep the engine in good operating condition.

A poorly running engine can cause the catalytic converter to overheat. cause damage to the converter or the vehicle.

• If your engine backfires. backfire. stall. or otherwise not working properly. Stop driving and switch off the engine. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible.

Oxygenated fuels

Some conventional fuels mixed with alcohol or an ether compound are available in some locations to reduce emissions and meet clean air standards. These gasolines are collectively referred to as oxygenated fuels. If you want to use oxygenated fuel. Verify that it is lead free and meets minimum octane and blending requirements.

The following fuel blends have been approved for use in your vehicle:

• Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) up to 10 vol.-%.

If you have accidentally filled your fuel tank with an oxygenated fuel with higher percentages. You may experience performance issues. To solve the problem. Have the fuel tank drained and replaced with the correct fuel by your dealer. Fuel system or performance problems resulting from the use of higher percentage oxygenated fuel will not be covered by your warranty.

NOTICE Improper use of oxygenated fuels can damage metal. Rubber. and plastic parts of your fuel system.

Removing the Left Side Cover#

1. Remove the front seat. 2 p. 80 2. Remove the screw and clip. 2 p. 79 3. Remove the prongs from the grommets. Then, remove the left side panel backwards by releasing the hooks.

# Installation

Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.

1. When the engine is cold. Let the engine idle for 3 to 5 minutes.

2. Turn the ignition switch OFF and wait 2 to 3 minutes.

3. Park your vehicle upright on firm ground. flat surface.

4. Check that the oil level is between the upper and lower marks on the oil level inspection window.

Add engine oil

When the engine oil is below or near the lower level line. top up with the recommended engine oil.

2 p. 71. 2 p. 137 1. Remove the oil filler cap. Pour in the recommended oil up to the upper level mark. u Park your vehicle upright on firm ground. level surface when checking the oil level.

2. Reinstall the oil filler cap securely.

NOTICE Overfilling with oil or operating with insufficient oil can damage the engine. Do not mix oils of different brands and types. They can affect lubrication and clutch operation.

Checking the coolant

Check the coolant level in the reserve tank when the engine is cold.

1. Park your vehicle on a fixed spot. flat surface.

2. Keep your vehicle upright.

3. Check that the coolant level is between the UPPER level and LOWER level marks on the reserve tank.

If the coolant level drops noticeably or the reserve tank is empty. You probably have a serious leak. Have your vehicle checked by your dealer.

When the coolant level is below the LOWER level mark. top up with the recommended coolant (2 p.73) until the level reaches the UPPER level mark.

Only add fluid from the reserve tank cap and do not remove the radiator cap.

1. Remove the reserve tank cap and add fluid while monitoring the coolant level. u Do not fill beyond the UPPER mark.

WARNING

Removing the radiator cap when the engine is hot can cause coolant to spurt out. possibly scalds.

Always allow the engine and radiator to cool before removing the radiator cap.

Check brake fluid

1. Park your vehicle upright on firm ground. flat surface.

Front Check that the brake fluid reservoir is level and that the fluid level is above the LOWER mark.

Rear Check that the brake fluid reservoir is level and that the fluid level is between the LOWER level and UPPER level marks.

If the brake fluid level in either reservoir is below the LOWER mark or if the brake lever and pedal play becomes excessive. check the brake pads for wear.

If the brake pads are not worn. you most likely have a leak. Have your vehicle checked by your dealer.

Checking the brake pads

Check the condition of the brake pad wear indicators.

Front The pads need to be replaced when a brake pad has worn down to the bottom of the gauge.

Rear The pads must be replaced when a brake pad is worn down to the turn signal.

Front Inspect the brake pads in front of the caliper. u Always check both the left and right brake calipers.

Rear Check the brake pads from the rear right side of the vehicle.

If necessary. Have the pads replaced by your specialist dealer.

Always replace the left and right brake pads at the same time.

Adjusting the brake light switch

Check the operation of the brake light switch.

Hold the brake light switch and turn the adjusting nut in direction A if the switch is too late. or turn the nut in direction B if the switch switches too early.

Checking the side stand

1. Check the side stand for ease of movement. If the side stand is stiff or squeaks. Clean pivot area and lubricate pivot pin with clean grease.

2. Check the spring for damage or loss of tension.

3. Sit on the vehicle. Shift the transmission to neutral. and raise the side stand.

4. Start the engine. Pull in the clutch lever. and shift the transmission into gear.

5. Lower the sidestand completely. The engine should stop when you lower the side stand. If the engine does not stop. Have your vehicle checked by your dealer.

Check drive chain slack

Check the drive chain slack at several points along the chain. If the sag is not constant at all points. Some links may be broken and binding.

Have the chain checked by your specialist dealer.

1. Shift the transmission into neutral. Stop the engine.

2. Place your vehicle on the side stand on a firm surface. flat surface.

3. Move the lower part of the drive chain up and down to check the chain slack. in the middle between the sprockets.

Drive Chain Slack: 1 - 1 3/8 inches (25 - 35 mm)

4. Roll the vehicle forward and check that the chain moves smoothly.

5. Check the sprockets. 2 p. 72 6. Clean and lubricate the drive chain.

Checking the clutch

# Checking the free play of the clutch lever

Check the clutch lever free play.

Freeplay at clutch lever: 3/8 - 13/16 in (10 - 20 mm)

Check the clutch cable for kinks or signs of wear. If necessary. Have your dealer replace it.

Lubricate the clutch cable with a commercial cable lubricant to prevent premature wear and corrosion.

NOTICE Improper backlash adjustment can cause premature clutch wear.

# Upper adjustment

Try adjusting with the upper clutch cable adjuster first.

1. Loosen the top lock nut.

2. Turn the upper clutch cable adjuster until the free play is 10 - 20 mm (3/8 - 13/16 inch).

3. Tighten the top locknut and recheck the clearance.

# Bottom adjustment

When the upper clutch cable adjuster is unscrewed almost to the stop. or the correct freeplay cannot be obtained. Try adjusting with the lower clutch cable adjusting nut.

1. Loosen the top locknut and turn the top clutch cable adjuster all the way in (to allow maximum clearance). Tighten the top lock nut.

2. Loosen the bottom lock nut.

3. Turn the adjusting nut until the clutch lever free play is 3/8 - 13/16 inch (10 - 20 mm).

4. Tighten the lower locknut and check the clutch lever free play.

5. Start the engine. pull the clutch lever. and put in gear. Make sure that the engine does not stall and the vehicle does not crawl. Slowly release the clutch lever and accelerate. Your vehicle should move smoothly and gradually accelerate.

If the correct adjustment cannot be achieved or the clutch does not work properly. see your dealer.

Checking the throttle valve

With the engine off. Check that the throttle rotates smoothly from fully closed to fully open in all steering positions and that the throttle play is correct. If the throttle does not move smoothly or does not close automatically. or if the cable is damaged. Have the vehicle checked by your dealer.

Throttle Grip Flange Play: 1/16 - 1/4 inch (2 - 6 mm)

Adjusting the gas clearance

1. Slide the cable sleeve.

2. Loosen the lock nut.

3. Turn the adjuster until the free play is 1/16 - 1/4 inch (2 - 6 mm).

4. Tighten the lock nut and reinstall the cable boot. then check the throttle function again.
