ATV & UTV Tire Pressure Guide: Polaris, Can-Am & More | ATV outdoors (2023)

ATV tire pressure directly affects the quality of your ride and recommended values vary depending on what you want to achieve. Since this is an often overlooked topic, I decided to share with you all my tips on choosing the best tire pressure for your quad.

In general, an ATV's tire pressure should be between 2 and 10 PSI (pounds per square inch). Any reading below 2 PSI can cause your tire to fall off, while any reading above 10 PSI can result in a blowout. You rarely want to reach these extremes, as most manufacturers recommend a 4 to 7 PSI ATV tire pressure rating. You want lower than recommended tire pressure when you need more traction, such as when crawling over sand or rocks. On the other hand, higher tire pressure is best for carrying cargo or driving on a slippery road.

There are a few factors to consider when determining the best tire pressure for the day. While 3 PSI may seem fine today, tomorrow you may be running 8 PSI. Keep reading for my full guide to ATV tire pressure, from finding the best value for you to making adjustments based on your situation.

How much air should be in ATV tires?

ATVs require lower tire pressures than a car or a UTV, with most owners preferring between 4 and 7 PSI. The best way to determine how much air to add to your quad's tires is to check the recommendations.

You should look at the sidewall of the tires first, especially if you decide to throw out the stock tires and buy a different kind. Be sure to check all tires, as some ATVs come with different tire sizes on the front and rear of the four-wheeler.

(Video) Tips on Checking & Setting the Air Pressure in your ATV or SXS Tires

Here you will see a number that is quite high, usually between 25 and 30 PSI. Never inflate your tires to this value, as this represents the maximum allowed tire pressure. This is only necessary when you mount your tires for the first time. Then you deflate them to a reading between 2 and 10 PSI, depending on your needs.

The second recommendation to look at is in your ATV owner's manual. Each quad manufacturer has its own unique design and factors such as the overall weight and dimensions of the ATV can affect the recommended pressure. As a result, depending on the specific quad model you have, the ideal ATV pressure can be anywhere from 3 to 7 PSI.

If you don't have the owner's manual, read to the end where I'll share how to determine tire pressure for some of the most popular brands on the market.

It is important to know the exact size of the ATV tire to determine the correct air pressure reading. You can read this article I wrote where I highlight a detailed ATV bolt pattern and size chart that provide all the information you need.

What PSI should ATV tires be at?

On average, the PSI ATV tires should have is 5. Most manufacturers recommend 5 PSI for their quads and this is an average value that is considered appropriate for most scenarios. However, that doesn't mean it's always the best choice.

If you want the simple answer, it's best to keep your ATV tire pressure at the recommended value from your quad's owner's manual. The engineers who arrived at that number took into account the average usage of an ATV. You won't get stuck on a trail if you keep your PSI between 3 and 7 PSI, according to your quad's specs.

That said, there are benefits to lower and higher pressure in your tires respectively. If you want to drive as smoothly as possible in different scenarios, you need to adjust your PSI accordingly.

When to Use Lower PSI?

When your ATV's tire pressure is lower, it means the machine has more traction in difficult terrain. Sand dunes, heavy mud and snowy trails all require a lower than normal PSI. Lowering your tire pressure helps float so you don't get stuck in soft terrain.

(Video) What PSI should you run in your tires?

Another situation where low tire pressure is desirable is when crawling over rocks. This extreme sport is not for everyone and requires a lot of skill and adjustments, including a lower tire pressure. Competitors are even investing in special low-pressure tires designed specifically for this off-road experience.

For all of these situations, it's best to stick to a reading between 2.5 and 4 PSI, relative to the manufacturer's recommendations. For example, if you usually inflate your tires to 8 PSI, then a low value like 2.5 may be too low for the weight of your quad. In this case, a drop to 4 PSI will most likely be enough to get the traction you need.

When to Use Higher PSI?

You'll want to inflate your tires to a higher PSI if you're going to be riding on a slippery road or if you're putting extra weight on your ATV. Higher pressure will help you reach higher speeds, but it won't absorb impact either. You can damage your quad more easily with high tire pressure on rocky trails, which is why it is most recommended for slippery pavement.

You may notice that your owner's manual already recommends a higher PSI for hauling cargo. This is optional information usually provided for utility ATVs. However, that doesn't mean you can't increase your pressure by a pound or two to get the same benefits.

Whether you're hauling heavy cargo or putting another passenger on your quad bike, you can increase your PSI for a smoother ride. My recommendations are to increase to a value of 7 to 10 PSI depending on the pressure you are already using. Similar to the point I made in the previous section, jumping from 4 PSI to 10 PSI can be too much for your machine and can pop your tire.

What should I inflate my ATV tires with?

You can inflate your ATV tires with any type of air pump or air compressor you have. Some off-roaders choose carbon dioxide (CO2) to repair punctures, but this is a method more commonly used for bicycles. I personally wouldn't recommend them because they break faster and you need multiple cartridges for a quad band.

Since air compressors can be an expensive purchase, you can check out portable versions, or even a manual air pump for emergencies. In fact, if you need to inflate your tire, you can find an air compressor at your local gas station, mechanic's shop, or even another off-roader friend.

If you're dealing with a flat tire, you'll need some more tools, often found in a tire plug kit. Here's a handy video from Homeowner Repair that shows you exactly how to use one, as well as how to inflate, deflate and check ATV tire pressure:

What should the tire pressure be on a Polaris Sportsman?

ATV & UTV Tire Pressure Guide: Polaris, Can-Am & More | ATV outdoors (1)

According to a few owner's manuals from different years, a newer Polaris Sportsman should have a tire pressure of 7 PSI on both the front and rear racks. However, for their 2010 models, Polaris recommends 5 PSI instead. The best course of action is to always refer to your owner's manual for the specific year and model of your ATV.

If you bought your quad from someone else or just lost it, you can easily find your owner's manual atthe official Polaris website. All you have to do is enter the make, year and model and you will receive the correct manual for your Sportsman.

As you can see, Polaris has changed their recommended tire pressure rating from 5 PSI to 7 PSI. This seems to be the trend of recent years. Just take a look at this list I put together of all the Sportsman ATVs released in 2022:

ModelRecommended tire pressure

Tire pressure Honda ATV

Hondas have been around for what seems like an eternity, which is why you will definitely see some fluctuation in the recommended tire pressures in their manuals. With newer designs, the build of the quads changes in addition to the optimal specs. You can see the changes in recommended ATV tire pressure from year to year. Here's a rundown of what I found for the latest 2022 Honda ATVs:

2022 Honda Fourtrax Foreman4,4 psi4,4 psi
2022 Honda Fourtrax Rincon4,4 psi3,6 psi
2022 Honda TRX90X2,9 psi2,9 psi

You can already see the large pressure difference recommended from one brand to another. You can see how a medium reading can't be right for everyone, as 5 PSI might be too low for a Polaris or too much for a Honda. Again, I recommend you watchthe official Honda Powersports websiteto find your owner's manual and the perfect tire pressure for your ATV.

Tire pressure Can-Am Outlander

My research shows that the optimum tire pressure for a Can-Am Outlander is between 4.5 and 7 PSI. Interestingly, Can-Am prefers to offer an interval for quite a few of their ATVs. Yet even that interval changes with time and model.

(Video) Top 5 ATV Must Have Trail Tools and Accessories

A quad like the 2010 Can-Am Outlander 800R EFI is recommended to have between 4.5 and 7 PSI. A brand new 2022 Can-Am Outlander X MR 850 is best kept between 6 and 7 PSI. To find the correct tire pressure for your Can-Am Outlander, visitthe official library of Can-Am manuals here.

If you are just buying a 2022 model, you can check the recommended tire pressure in the table below:

Yamaha ATV tire pressure

As with all other ATV manufacturers, Yamahas definitely vary from year to year. Here is theYamaha manual libraryto find your own year and model. Just as Polaris prefers to keep one tire pressure rating for all their models in one year, this brand also has a preferred combination.

As you can see in the table below, all of their 2021 models have an optimum tire pressure of 5 PSI on the front rack and 4.4 PSI on the rear rack. Since all 2021 models appear to be refreshed in 2022, I assume we will see the same values for the newer quads as well. Unfortunately, the manuals for their 2022 lineup are not yet available in their online library.

Arctic Cat tire pressure

Last but certainly not least, I often get questions about the tire pressures on Arctic Cat ATVs. This doesn't surprise me since there are almost no user manuals in theresources page available on their website

If you have lost your Alterra owner's manual, call your nearest Arctic Cat representative or dealer for assistance. That said, you can still try your luck and see if your year and model are listed on the website.

Since there is no library of manuals available, it is difficult for me to compile a list of ATV tire pressure values for the latest Arctic Cats. Still, during my research I found a few manuals from 2015 to 2017, so here's what I was able to gather about this brand:

If you can't get in touch with a pro in time for your trail ride, I think it's safe to assume that a tire pressure of 4 to 5 PSI is more than okay for your Arctic Cat.

last words

ATV tire pressure is a topic that fascinates me because a small change can have such a big impact on your off-road experience. Figuring out and using the correct tire pressure is an essential step in the processATV maintenance. While the average optimal tire pressure is 5 PSI, see how that value differs for brands like Polaris, Can-Am and even Honda. When you factor in special tires, different road conditions and extra weight, the issue of choosing the perfect PSI value can become complex. Is 50 too much air in a tire? ›

Fifty psi is a lot of pressure for a passenger-car tire. That number is on the sidewall because it's the tire's maximum allowable pressure. That means you can put up to 50 pounds of air in that tire without worrying about the tire exploding or deforming to the point where the car won't handle safely.

Should tire pressure on an ATV be the same on both sides? ›

The tire pressure should be the same per axle. If your owners manual suggests a certain pressure for your back tire, that goes for both left and right back tires. This is also the case for the front tires. Make sure both tires of an axle are set to the same psi.

Should psi be higher in front or back? ›

Tyre pressures are normally higher in the front than the rear, to compensate for the extra weight of the engine and transmission, especially on front-wheel-drive cars.

Should you rotate tires side to side? ›

Using tire rotation as preventative maintenance will help ensure your tires wear evenly, both front-to-back and side-to-side. This helps enhance wear quality and prevent an increase in pattern noise.

Does more or less tire pressure help grip? ›

The tire will also likely have less grip if underinflated, Willcome said. An overinflated tire can have less grip, too. And it can affect handling, because the overinflated tire is not correctly absorbing impacts, which can send more force to the vehicle's suspension.

Does more tire pressure mean more grip? ›

The Hoosier recommendation is that a higher pressure may give a little more maximum grip, but will require greater sensitivity to drive. The peak tyre grip will drop off more sharply. You can see this drop off in any tyre data you look at.

About this tyre

It should preferably be used with a pressure of 2.8 bar.

What happens if tire pressure is too high? ›

The high air pressure will distort the tire's shape, allowing only the middle of the tire to touch the road and focusing the wear down the center. While quickly worn tires are a serious problem, the distorted shape can also cause a decrease in traction, again making it a danger to drive.

Should I increase tire pressure for a heavy load? ›

Heavy loads usually require you to inflate your tyres above their normal pressure. The handbook for your vehicle will specify the appropriate pressure. It is important to note that every tyre has a maximum air pressure and weight capacity. Ensure you don't exceed this level, or your sidewalls will bulge excessively.

What happens if tire pressure is too low? ›

When air pressure gets too low, the tire's sidewalls flex more, and heat builds up within the tire. If the overheating gets severe, a section of the tire's rubber can separate from its carcass—the mix of fabric and steel that the tire is built on. If this happens suddenly, a blowout can result.

Is 60 PSI too much for tires? ›

Does tire pressure need to be exact? ›

So, when filling your tires, the recommended tire pressure is the best compromise between handling, comfort, fuel economy and safety. But it's certainly fine to go over the recommended inflation by a psi or two. And going over is always better than going under.

Does tire pressure have to be exactly the same? ›

Yes, it is generally recommended to have the same tire pressure in all four tires and to maintain the correct tire pressure as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. This is to ensure proper tire wear and vehicle handling. The tires should have the PSI recommended by the manufacturer.

What would cause a tire to have both outside edges worn equally? ›

Sagging Springs

Front tires wearing on the outside edge is usually a result of aging coil springs. As they lose height, so does the vehicle, causing the whole suspension to misalign, especially in camber.

Does tire pressure affect ride quality? ›

Some cars come with a very high PSI rating. This affects the ride comfort of the car, and in some cases, reducing the tyre pressure can make a significant improvement to the ride quality. On the other hand, high tyre pressure means that there is less rolling resistance, which in-turn, improves fuel economy.

Do you rotate tires front to back or diagonal? ›

They must always be rotated front to rear — no matter the vehicle they are installed on — so the direction of the rotation does not change. Watch our Tread Life video to see more rotation patterns.

Should I rotate and balance my tires or just rotate? ›

Most manufacturers recommend that all four tires should be rotated and balanced approximately every seven thousand miles. A great way to keep up with this recommendation is to have your tires rotated and balanced about every other time you have your oil changed.

Does it matter if directional tires are put on backwards? ›

If directional tires get mounted backward, you won't get the hydroplaning resistance and other performance driving benefits the tread is designed for. Front and rear tires often wear at different rates. It is recommended to rotate standard tires between front and back and crossways to maximize lifetime mileage.

Does lower PSI give better traction? ›

Reducing air pressure will not give you more traction and your tires could become seriously underinflated, affecting steering. Keep in mind that every time the outside temperature drops 10 degrees, the tire air pressure goes down about one pound per square inch.

Is lower tire pressure faster? ›

If you're riding on a perfectly smooth velodrome, higher pressures are faster. However, on imperfect surfaces, such as roads, very high pressures simply increase vibrations and can slow you down. As roads get rougher, with bigger holes and bumps, the optimum tyre pressure decreases further.

Does lower PSI give more traction? ›

Lowering tire pressure makes tires soft and pliable, so they can conform to the shape of the rocks, improving traction and even helping to smooth out what can be an extremely rough ride. Rock crawlers can sometimes decrease tire pressure into the single digits!
